EMDR is an evidenced based psychotherapy treatment that was originally designed to alleviate the distress associated with traumatic memories. EMDR is highly effective in treating PTSD and disturbing memories. It can be thought of as a physiologically based therapy that helps a person see disturbing material in a new and less distressing way.
“Natural processing” is the somatically-based approach to treating trauma. Somatic meaning “of the body.” We all have a natural “drive for completion” meaning that we naturally want to complete processing unpleasant events in our lives. We want to feel complete and whole however for many of us this does not happen and it becomes problematic. We begin to experience difficulties like anxiety, depression, physical symptoms and stress reactions, or emotional intolerance.
